Can you tell us about yourself and the history of the Foundation for Remembrance of Slavery?
I am Aïssata Seck, Director of the Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery. My career is marked by a long-standing commitment to the recognition of the history and memory of the Senegalese Tirailleurs (Soldiers of the French Colonial troops) and, more broadly, to the promotion of memories linked to enslavement and colonial legacies.
The Foundation, a recognised public-interest organisation, was created in 2019 by the French government to continue and expand the recognition efforts initiated by the Taubira Law of 2001. Its mission is to transmit the history of colonial enslavement, to celebrate its memories, and to promote the cultural legacies that stem from it. It operates in mainland France, overseas territories, and internationally.
What projects are FME currently focused on?
After marking the bicentennial of the indemnity imposed on Haiti in 1825 in 2025, the Foundation is now preparing for two major milestones.
The first is the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Taubira Law in 2026, a founding law that recognised enslavement as a crime against Humanity. We aim to make it a moment of remembrance, citizenship, and culture of national and international scope.
This will involve the mobilisation of cultural institutions, educational and scientific events, as well as initiatives that bring together youth, artists, researchers, and international partners. It will also be an opportunity to launch a national 'Lieux de Mémoire' (Places of Remembrance) label, intended to promote and connect French heritage sites linked to the history of enslavement.
The second is the preparation of a major exhibition in 2027, which will be a major step in making the history of enslavement in France visible and accessible to as many people as possible. These projects are part of a broader dynamic: transmitting, uniting and permanently inscribing this history in the collective consciousness.
What kind of activities do you do around education and why do you find this important?
Education is at the heart of our mission. We develop educational resources for teachers, organise school competitions, and offer tools adapted to young audiences. The challenge is to give young people the keys to understand this universal history and to combat prejudice. Passing on knowledge is essential to build a fairer society that is aware of its past.
What challenges have you encountered highlighting Black cultural heritage in France?
The first challenge is invisibility: for a long time, the heritage linked to enslavement and Black populations was ignored or marginalised in national narratives. We must work towards its recognition and integration into the common heritage.
The second challenge is of a memorial and political nature: this history touches deep wounds and sometimes remains a source of tension. Finally, there is a material challenge: the identification, conservation, and promotion of objects and archives necessarily requires significant resources.
How have digital practices supported your work and mission?
Digital technology is a fundamental tool for expanding access to this history. It allows for the widespread dissemination of educational resources, the accessibility of digitized archives, and the ability to reach young and connected audiences.
During the pandemic, for example, our digital activities were essential for maintaining transmission and commemorations. Today, we are further exploring digital mediation through social media and collaborative platforms.
From your perspective, what is the importance of highlighting these digitised objects at FME?
Digitisation makes it possible to preserve and make visible objects that are often dispersed, fragile, or difficult to access. It democratises access to heritage and offers the opportunity to cross-reference perspectives by linking collections located in France, Europe, overseas territories, or the Americas. For the Foundation, it is a way of anchoring this history in a global and shared narrative.
Can you tell us about a particular story or object your audiences have been interested in?
One of the most striking objects is Charles X's 1825 ordinance imposing a colossal indemnity on Haiti in exchange for its recognition. The original archive, preserved in the French National Archives, arouses strong emotion: it embodies both the freedom won by Haiti and the injustice of the debt that weighed on its development. Its presentation to the public in 2025 was a powerful moment of remembrance and education.
What advice would you give to other European institutions looking for ways to highlight their Black history?
I would first advise them to work with the communities concerned, to co-construct narratives and avoid a top-down approach. Then, to bring national memories into dialogue with global history: the history of Black populations in Europe is inseparable from Atlantic and Indian Ocean, colonial, and postcolonial circulations. Finally, to invest in research, education, and digitization, which are powerful levers for permanently inscribing these stories in the collective consciousness.

Nous nous entretenons avec Aïssata Seck, directrice de la Fondation pour la Mémoire de l’Esclavage, sur la mission de l’organisation et sur la manière dont elle donne aux jeunes les clés pour comprendre l’histoire et lutter contre les préjugés.
Pouvez-vous nous parler de vous et de l’histoire de la Fondation pour la mémoire de l’esclavage?
Je suis Aïssata Seck, directrice de la Fondation pour la mémoire de l’esclavage. Mon parcours est marqué par un engagement de longue date pour la reconnaissance de l’histoire et de la mémoire des tirailleurs sénégalais et, plus largement, pour la valorisation des mémoires liées à l’esclavage et aux héritages coloniaux.
La Fondation,reconnue d’utilité publique, a été créée en 2019 par l’État français pour poursuivre et amplifier l’action de reconnaissance initiée par la loi Taubira de 2001. Elle a pour mission de transmettre l’histoire de l’esclavage colonial, de célébrer ses mémoires et de valoriser les héritages culturels qui en sont issus. Elle agit en France hexagonale, dans les Outre-mer et à l’international.
Sur quels projets FME se concentre-t-il actuellement?

Quel genre d’activités faites-vous autour de l’éducation et pourquoi trouvez-vous cela important ?
L’éducation est au cœur de notre mission. Nous développons des ressources pédagogiques pour les enseignants, organisons des concours scolaires et proposons des outils adaptés aux jeunes publics. L’enjeu est de donner à la jeunesse les clés de compréhension de cette histoire universelle et de lutter contre les préjugés. La transmission est essentielle pour construire une société plus juste et consciente de son passé.
Quels défis avez-vous rencontrés pour mettre en valeur le patrimoine Noir en France ?
Le premier défi est l’invisibilisation : longtemps, le patrimoine lié à l’esclavage et aux populations noires a été ignoré ou marginalisé dans les récits nationaux. Il faut travailler à sa reconnaissance et à son intégration dans le patrimoine commun. Le deuxième défi est d’ordre mémoriel et politique : cette histoire touche à des blessures profondes et reste parfois source de tensions. Enfin, il existe un défi matériel : l’identification, la conservation et la valorisation des objets et archives nécessitent des moyens importants.
Comment les pratiques numériques ont-elles soutenu votre travail et votre mission ?
Le numérique est un outil fondamental pour élargir l’accès à cette histoire. Il permet de diffuser largement des ressources pédagogiques, de rendre accessibles des archives numérisées, et d’atteindre des publics jeunes et connectés.
Pendant la pandémie, par exemple, nos activités numériques ont été essentielles pour maintenir la transmission et les commémorations. Aujourd’hui, nous explorons davantage la médiation numérique à travers les réseaux sociaux et des plateformes collaboratives.
De votre point de vue, quelle est l’importance de mettre en valeur ces objets numérisés au FME ?
La numérisation permet de sauvegarder et de rendre visibles des objets souvent dispersés, fragiles ou difficilement accessibles. Elle démocratise l’accès au patrimoine et offre la possibilité de croiser les regards, en reliant des collections situées en France, en Europe, dans les Outre-mer ou dans les Amériques. Pour la Fondation, c’est une manière d’ancrer cette histoire dans un récit global et partagé.
Pouvez-vous nous parler d’une histoire ou d’un objet particulier qui a intéressé votre public ?
L’un des objets les plus marquants est l’ordonnance de Charles X de 1825 imposant à Haïti une indemnité colossale en échange de sa reconnaissance. L’archive originale, conservée aux Archives nationales, suscite une émotion forte : elle incarne à la fois la liberté conquise par Haïti et l’injustice de la dette qui a pesé sur son développement. Sa présentation au public en 2025 a été un moment fort de mémoire et de pédagogie.
Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux autres institutions européennes qui cherchent des moyens de mettre en valeur leur histoire des Noirs ?
Je leur conseillerais d’abord de travailler avec les communautés concernées, pour co-construire les récits et éviter une approche descendante. Ensuite, de faire dialoguer les mémoires nationales avec l’histoire globale : l’histoire des populations noires en Europe est indissociable des circulations atlantiques et d’Océan indien, coloniales et postcoloniales. Enfin, d’investir dans la recherche, l’éducation et la numérisation, qui sont des leviers puissants pour inscrire durablement ces histoires dans la conscience collective.
