EUreka3D developed a knowledge, service and resource hub to support institutions sharing data with the the common European data space for cultural heritage. The EUreka3D data hub offers an affordable and simple way to digitise, model, manage and enrich 3D records, including storage and computing resources to manage 3D assets and an integrated 3D viewer and automated export functionality to Europeana.eu. Throughout the project more than 5,000 new 2D and 3D digital records were ingested to Europeana.eu.
The project assessed the hub services through a use case pilot with four cultural institutions: Bibracte, Museo Della Carta di Pescia, CRDI and CUT.
EUreka3D also built capacity in institutions by developing training material for 3D digitisation, data processing and publication on Europeana.eu as well as organised training activities to support cultural heritage institutions with the use of the virtual space.
The work of EUreka3D was continued in a follow up project, EUreka3D-XR.
Project goals
- Address key challenges faced by cultural heritage institutions in 3D digitisation, storage and management of 3D assets, reusing 3D collections and capacity building.
- Anchor the initiative around three pillars:
- Quality (of data, metadata and paradata).
- Digital infrastructure (using European cloud services and federated authentication/authorisation to support 3D heritage workflows).
- Competence (building a 'competence centre' to train and support cultural-heritage institutions).
- Support the common European data space for cultural heritage by developing the EUreka3D Data Hub.
- Produce new, open-access content and editorials related to 3D cultural heritage content.
- Deliver capacity-building programmes and events to widen uptake by small and mid-sized institutions.
