AISTER (AI-enabled Citizen Participation in University-driven Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Safeguarding) maps and analyses current practices in AI and participatory approaches for heritage at risk, establishing an ethical framework to guide real-life case studies in partnership with academic and citizen communities.
AISTER will produce targeted training materials to build AI capacity in the cultural heritage sector, with a focus on upskilling university staff. It will also create practical guidelines to help engage students and citizens in heritage preservation through AI-supported human participation.
In doing so, the project will foster interdisciplinary collaboration across computer science, cultural heritage and social sciences, driving innovation in teaching and learning within universities. It will strengthen academia-policy cooperation on AI and human participation in safeguarding EU and Ukrainian cultural heritage in times of crisis.
AISTER builds on the work of the Europeana Network Association Working Group on preserving Ukraine’s cultural heritage and will collaborate closely with Europeana and young professionals to enhance outreach and engagement.
